A shop in Sannenzaka, Kyoto – 2009

This is a pretty famous shop in Sannenzaka. I have recently found out that the gourd-shaped “flasks” that it sells are actually talismans as protection from the jinx of Sannenzaka. I have realised that thanks to a documentary called Mapping Kyoto Street, by NHK World TV. They say that you have to take home the gourd, take out the stopper and hang it high, above your head. The gourd is supposed to suck in the negative energy of illness that escapes from your head. I wish I knew this at the time of my visit! I would have bought plenty of gourds!!

PS on the glare of the glass case on the right, with Maneki Neko inside, you can see myself taking the picture…. how unprofessional! 😉
